Introduction

In 1910, Szeged was the second-largest city in the Transleithanian part of the Habsburg Monarchy and a vibrant centre of Hungarian Secessionist architecture. Its most celebrated architect was Ede Magyar, author of the graceful Reök Palace. Ferenc Raichle, renowned for his family palace in nearby Szabadka (Subotica), created ornate buildings also in Szeged. Leading Hungarian masters left their mark here as well: Ödön Lechner designed the façade and staircases of the Deutsch Palace, while Lipót Baumhorn, the foremost synagogue architect of the era, authored the Great Synagogue of Szeged along with several other buildings.
