Introduction

Subotica is a city in northern Serbia, notable for its Art Nouveau architecture. In 1910, it was the tenth largest city of the Habsburg Monarchy and the third largest in the Hungarian half of the empire. Known in Hungarian as Szabadka, it is regarded as one of the main centres of Hungarian Secession.
The most prominent architects active in Subotica were Dezső Jakab and Marcell Komor, who designed several of the city’s landmark buildings, like the Synagogue and the City Hall. The former is among the largest synagogues in Europe and one of the finest examples of religious architecture in the Art Nouveau style. Another notable example of Secessionist architecture in the city is the Raichle Palace.
Beyond the historic centre, the lake resort of Palić also contains numerous buildings from the belle époque, many of which were likewise designed by Jakab and Komor.
