Introduction

The Stockholm Metro (Stockholms tunnelbana), inaugurated in 1950, was the first rapid transit system in the Nordic countries. Today, it spans approximately 110 kilometres and comprises three lines with a total of 100 stations. Of these, 47 are underground, while 53 are above ground.
What truly sets the Stockholm Metro apart is its reputation as the ‘world’s longest art gallery’. Since the 1950s, more than 150 artists have transformed its stations into a dynamic public art exhibition. Murals, engravings, reliefs, mosaics, sculptures, and installations adorn the walls, ceilings, and platforms, turning everyday commutes into immersive cultural experiences.
The most fascinating stations date from the 1970s, when a new architectural approach was introduced. Instead of concealing the bedrock, the new underground stations were carved directly into it. These so-called ‘cave stations’ feature exposed rock walls, often painted or dramatically lit, creating atmospheric spaces that blur the boundary between natural formation and artistic intervention.
