Aveiro Arte Nova

Introduction

Art Nouveau flourished in Portugal between roughly 1905 and 1920, drawing strong inspiration from French and Belgian examples. While many examples of the style can be found in Lisbon and Porto, the city of Aveiro stands out as the true showcase of Portuguese Arte Nova, where its presence is most concentrated and visually striking.

In Portugal, Arte Nova was expressed primarily through decorative elements rather than in the overall structure or volume of buildings. The movement found fertile ground in the ornamentation of façades, with the use of stylised floral motifs, wrought-iron details, and especially ceramic tiles (azulejos), which became hallmarks of the style. In essence, Arte Nova in Portugal was less about structural innovation and more about artistic display—an ornamental language that gave cities like Aveiro a distinctive identity within the broader European movement.

The leading figure of Portuguese Arte Nova was the architect Francisco Augusto da Silva Rocha, whose most outstanding works can be found in Aveiro.
